Chandrasekhara Ashtakam – Meaning
Chandrasekhara Ashtakam – English Meaning
This initial verse of the Chandrashekhara Ashtakam serves as a heartfelt appeal to Lord Chandrashekhara, a manifestation of Lord Shiva who is graced with the crescent moon, seeking his protection. The frequent repetition of his name illustrates the devotee’s profound yearning for divine favor. The terms “Pahimam” and “Rakshamam” underscore the desire for safeguarding and nurturing against all threats. This expression embodies a deep sense of surrender and trust in the Lord’s capacity to eliminate obstacles and provide comfort.
Verse 1 – Lord Chandrashekhara resides atop the majestic Mount Kailasa, a luminous and sacred dwelling. He wields a formidable bow, and his arrows are known to vanquish the three cities of the demons, known as Tripurasura. The sound of his anklets harmonizes with the hissing of serpents, creating a distinctive blend that conveys both tranquility and strength. The verse concludes with the assurance that yielding to Chandrashekhara dispels all fears of mortality, as even Yama, the deity of death, is powerless against his devotees.
Verse 2 – The lotus-like feet of Lord Chandrashekhara spreads the fragrance of sacred blooms from five celestial trees. His third eye, representing knowledge and wisdom, once incinerated Kamadeva, the god of love, symbolizing triumph over desires. The Lord’s body is adorned with holy ash, or Bhasma, signifying a detachment from the material realm. This verse reassures devotees that Chandrashekhara, who liberates from the cycles of birth and death, offers eternal protection from all fears, including that of death itself.
Verse 3 – Lord Chandrashekhara is draped in a tiger skin, emblematic of courage and strength. His lotus feet are venerated by Brahma and other celestial beings, who honor his supreme dominion. The cascading waters of the celestial Ganges flow through his matted hair, imparting purity and sanctity to all. By surrendering to this magnificent and majestic form of Shiva, devotees are liberated from earthly fears and receive his divine grace.
Verse 4 – Lord Shiva, the companion of Kubera (the King of Yakshas), has symbolically diminished Bhaga’s eye, representing the suppression of ego. He is adorned with serpents as his ornaments, showcasing his dominion over formidable beings. The daughter of the mountain king, Parvati, enhances his left side, symbolizing the harmonious union of Shakti and Shiva. With his blue throat, a result of consuming poison, and wielding his axe and deer, he safeguards his devotees from all forms of harm, including death.
Verse 5 – Lord Chandrashekhara, embellished with coiled serpents and ear ornaments, rides his sacred bull, Vrishabha. He is revered by sages such as Narada and other ascetics, highlighting his supreme authority. He defeated Andhakasura and offers a sanctuary of eternal peace to all who seek refuge in him. This stanza emphasizes his power and his position as the ultimate protector and liberator.
Verse 6 – Lord Shiva is the supreme healer (Beshajam), remedying the affliction of worldly existence (Bhava Roga). He dismantled Daksha’s Yagna to uphold dharma, exemplifying his unwavering sense of justice. As the personification of the three gunas (qualities) and the three-eyed Lord, he transcends the cycles of creation, preservation, and destruction. Surrendering to him bestows both material enjoyment (Bhukti) and liberation (Mukti), alleviating any fear of death or sin.
Verse 7 – Lord Chandrashekhara embodies profound compassion for his devotees, earning the title of Bhakta Vatsala, and is revered by all sentient beings. He is recognized as the eternal and supreme entity, Paratparam, existing beyond human understanding and measurement, known as Aprameya. His divine form encompasses the fundamental elements of nature—water (Soma), fire (Hutashana), and wind (Pavana)—which reflect his omnipresent essence. Through his infinite grace, he offers protection to his followers, rendering the threat of death ineffective against them.
Verse 8 – As the creator, sustainer, and destroyer of the cosmos, Chandrashekhara exemplifies total dominion over all existence. He pervades every realm, providing sanctuary for all creatures. Engaged in the eternal divine play (Krida), he is accompanied by Ganesha and various celestial beings. Those who seek refuge in him find themselves shielded from fear, particularly the fear of death.
Phalasruthi – This hymn, authored by Markandeya, who was rescued from death by Shiva, promises protection to all who recite it with sincere devotion. Reciting this hymn liberates individuals from the anxiety of premature death and bestows upon them a long and healthy life. The Lord grants his devotees an abundance of wealth, success, and joy. Ultimately, Chandrashekhara effortlessly bestows liberation upon those who surrender to him.
